Welcome to Mad Wizard Tutoring

Hello! Thanks for stopping in and checking out my business My name is Dr. Jill Bartholomew, and I am the founder and owner of Mad Wizard Tutoring. I started my business in August of 2020 because I saw a great need to help as many families as I could who were struggling with school and COVID-19. I believe in the value of personalizing education for our children whether they are in a K-12, adult, college, or professional (master's or doctoral) setting. All learners are welcome here.

My Story

My name is Jill Bartholomew. I'm the owner and tutor of Mad Wizard Tutoring. I have had some amazing, diverse experiences in educating students of all ages. I believe deeply in Benjamin Franklin's advice, "Tell me, and I forget. Teach me, and I remember. Involve me, and I learn." Learning is a lifelong voyage, and we are explorers.

I received a BA in French Language and Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Michigan in 1994. I received a MA in English from Brigham Young University in 2002. I have taken coursework toward a MAT degree in Secondary English Education through Webster University, and I have almost finished my Ph.D. in Education through Northcentral University.

I have a diverse background in education. I have taught all ages of students in both traditional classroom settings, hybrid, and online. I have taught in the K-12 classroom both traditionally and online. I am also TESOL-certified to teach ESL students and have taught ESL lessons with several companies. I have experience teaching children ages 6-18 and adults. I am also currently homeschooling my 11-year old son. I am currently certified as a tutor with the National Tutor Association and belong to the College and Reading Learning Association (CRLA) and Association for the Coaching and Tutoring Profession (ACTP).

While my specialty is English Language Arts, I am certified to tutor in all K-12 core subjects. I also offer test preparation, study skill, and beginning through intermediate French language lessons. Throughout the year, I also try to offer engaging learning camps, or short, small classes geared towards teaching specific academic skills.

I love teaching. I love my students and their families, and I hope that shows in each and every meeting. More than anything, I love seeing the confidence of these young minds grow as they master strategies to become better readers and writers.

My Educational Philosopy

What does your child need to succeed?

As owner and educator at Mad Wizard Tutoring, I have had a diverse set of educational experiences. They have all led me to believe that the key to educational success is first mental and then academic. Research indicated that there are at least eight different types of intelligence. Sometimes, traditional schools just aren't able to personalize our children's educational experience. As a result, their brains need to work harder than necessary to process or understand new concepts. It's not that our children are lazy or dumb; they just aren't learning in the best, most comfortable way for their intelligence.

I also believe deeply in growth mindset strategies. I want to be your child's cheerleader. As a tutor, one of my first important jobs is to build confidence. Every child of school-age in the U.S. needs to understand that they can succeed at this school thing. Gaining confidence leads to improved motivation and effort even if the learning task is difficult. We can do hard things, and if we fail once or twenty times, that's ok. We'll just try looking at the problem in a different way until it makes sense.

Finally, I believe that educating the mind is only part of the purpose of schooling. We must also educate the heart. Play is very important. Creativity is also key. I want my students to feel a sense of pride and ownership in their learning process.
